What to Expect from a RESP-FIT Training Course in Australia

RESP-FIT is a voluntary, national respirator fit testing training and accreditation program developed and managed by the Australian Institute of Occupational Hygienists (AIOH). The program has two main objectives:

  • To improve worker health protection for those wearing tight-fitting respiratory protective equipment (RPE) through reliable fit testing by competent fit testers in Australia.
  • To provide workplaces with the information and tools needed to make informed decisions about RPE fit testing that is appropriate for their environment and controls.

Course Structure for RESP-FIT Training

The RESP-FIT accredited training course is delivered over two days:

  • Day 1 – Online Learning

The online component typically requires up to the equivalent of a full day to complete, depending on individual learning pace. This section provides theoretical knowledge on both qualitative and quantitative fit-testing methods.

  • Day 2 – Face-to-Face Training

The in-person training consolidates theoretical learning and provides hands-on experience. Practical exercises ensure learners are confident in applying the knowledge gained online.

KINNECT Training’s RESP-FIT course covers quantitative CNC fit testing and qualitative ATT testing. We do not currently cover quantitative CNP testing, as this method is limited to reusable respirators and is the least commonly used in Australia.

At this time, the classroom equipment provided is the TSI Portacount particle counter and/or a qualitative fit testing kit with hood. KINNECT Training trainers are also competent to train users on the Accufit 9000 particle counter, and this can be arranged upon request.

Practical Training

The face-to-face training focuses on building competence through practical application. It includes:

  • Equipment requirements and maintenance
  • Understanding RPE selection
  • Preparing to conduct fit tests
  • Training and assessing RPE users prior to a fit test
  • Timing and steps for conducting a fit test
  • Medical and psychological considerations
  • Comfort assessments
  • Conducting fit tests
  • Fit test record requirements
  • Information provided to fit test subjects

KINNECT Training recognises that adults have diverse learning styles, strengths, and weaknesses. This course is designed to connect all learners with the practical skills needed to become competent fit testers.

Research consistently shows that hands-on experience enhances understanding, retention, and skill-building. Practical learning engages more brain regions and creates stronger neural connections than reading or observation alone.

Learning Outcomes

This approved RESP-FIT training course provides the knowledge foundation and practical experience required for fit test operators. Upon successful completion, learners will be competent to conduct fit testing in Australian workplaces.

Important Information

  • Completing a RESP-FIT accredited course does not grant RESP-FIT accreditation as a fit tester. Instead, it is the first step in preparing for that accreditation process.
  • The course covers the core knowledge and skills that form part of the assessment process for accredited fit testers.
  • It is not mandatory to complete an approved RESP-FIT training course before seeking accreditation, but it is highly recommended.
  • More information about becoming an accredited RESP-FIT fit tester can be found here: https://respfit.org.au/become-an-accredited-fit-tester.
  • RESP-FIT does not provide specific training or study materials.
