Asbestos Awareness Training – Online Course

Asbestos is still present in an estimated one in three Australian homes and workplaces built or renovated before 1990. Left undisturbed, it poses little risk — but drilling, cutting, sanding or demolishing materials that contain it can release microscopic fibres into the air, with serious long-term health consequences.
This online Asbestos Awareness course gives your team the knowledge to recognise asbestos-containing materials (ACM), understand the risks, and follow the correct procedures to stay safe — completed in just 30 minutes, anywhere, on any device.

Always check your relevant Safety Regulator’s requirements to ensure this Asbestos Awareness course is suitable for your needs.

What You Will Learn

This program is built around six core areas, based on current WHS legislation and industry best practice:

  1. Types and uses of asbestos — the difference between serpentine (chrysotile/white asbestos) and amphibole (amosite/brown and crocidolite/blue) fibres, and where each was commonly used in construction, insulation, gaskets, roofing and cement products.
  2. Where asbestos is found in the workplace — practical guidance for identifying ACM in buildings constructed or renovated before 1990, including high-risk zones like roofing, cladding, pipe lagging and fire-rated materials.
  3. Health risks of exposure — the diseases linked to asbestos inhalation, current Australian incidence data, and why there is no established safe exposure threshold.
  4. Roles and responsibilities — what a PCBU (Person Conducting a Business or Undertaking) and individual workers are each legally required to do under an asbestos management plan.
  5. Asbestos registers and safe work procedures — how to locate and read a site’s asbestos register, and the control measures used to prevent accidental exposure, including correct fit and use of respiratory protective equipment (RPE).
  6. Monitoring and compliance — exposure standards, control levels, and when health or air monitoring is required.

Important distinction

This course is Asbestos Awareness training. It is not a substitute for the licensed competency units required for workers who physically carry out asbestos removal work — that training is scoped separately, based on the class of removal work performed.
