If members of your workforce are required to wear a respirator as part of their PPE, your business needs a documented Respiratory Protection Program.
This training package is designed for businesses that are required to provide respiratory protective equipment to their staff. In order to ensure that respirators are used correctly in the workplace. Standard AS/NZS 1715:2009 Selection, use and maintenance of respiratory protection equipment, states that a business must have a documented Respiratory Protection Program, (RPP) in place. The RPP defines the policies and procedures your organisation will follow with regards to the use of respirators in the workplace.
Standard AS/NZS 1715:2009 provides an outline of the requirements for a proper Respiratory Protection Program, but how does a business go about creating a program that is suited to their organisation? This training program will take you through all the steps, from program outline to completed package, providing you with training guidelines and documentation templates that you can contextualise to suit your business needs.
Remember, fit testing is just one aspect of your business’s obligations with regards to respiratory protection. KINNECT Training has designed this program to take you step by step through the requirements that are outlined in the Standard to create a robust Respiratory Protection Program that is a reflection of your business’s commitment to respiratory safety in the workplace.

How to select a program administrator, included what skills and experience they will need.
How to provide an appropriate selection of RPE for your workplace to ensure the highest number of successful fit tests amongst staff that are required to wear a respirator.
How to create a contexualised medical screening document to help protect your workplace against liability.
Development of a training program to ensure your workers know how to properly use and maintain respiratory protection equipment
Procurement and distribution recommendations for both disposable and reusable RPE
Procedural recommendations to ensure your staff are complying with RPE requirements in your workplace
Information on maintenance and disposal requirements for RPE
Record keeping requirements, including templates and information on contextualising records to suit your workplace.
Recommendations on annual audits and program evaluations.

FAQ’s
Why does my business need this program?
Employers who decide to use respiratory protection to help lower worker exposures to hazardous airborne contaminants must follow all requirements of the AS/NZS 1715:2009 Selection, use and maintenance of respiratory protection equipment, including having a written respiratory protection program.
Can’t we just do fit-testing to meet the requirements of the Standard?
No, the Respiratory Protection Standard AS/NZS 1715:2009 Selection, use and maintenance of respiratory protection equipment, “Where respiratory protection equipment is required to be worn a written respiratory protection program shall be established”.
Where do I start after I complete this training?
You will start to build your program during the training! We will provide you with outlines, guidance and templates for you to contextualise to suit the needs of your business. We train you to start at the beginning, instead of putting the cart before the horse.
Is this a program that I can just “plug and play” for my company?
No, this is a guide which will enable you to create a bespoke program for your company. It includes templates and forms which may require contextualisation.
Will this program meet all the legal requirements for my company?

Is this a nationally recognised course?
No, this is not a Nationally Recognised “Unit of Competency”. Completion of this program will result in the issue of a Statement of Attendance.
When does fit testing need to be done?
Fit testing must be carried out:
before wearing a tight-fitting respirator for the first time;
whenever a new model of respirator is used;
if there is a change in the individual already assessed (eg excessive weight gain or loss).
What’s the difference between qualitative and quantitative respirator fit testing?
Qualitative fit testing is a method that can be used to test RPE up to a required fit protection factor of 10X. This test is suitable for any disposable, half-face reusable and half-face PAPR respirators. It cannot be used to test full-face respirators. The cost for the equipment is relatively low, and this type of testing can be done just about anywhere, although a well ventilated area is recommended.
It relies upon the wearer’s ability to detect a safe aerosol by taste. The results are, therefore, subjective and may not be reliable. There is a risk of test subject deception. The testing method can be time-consuming, as a single test can take 20-25 minutes to conduct properly, and each subsequent test will take the same amount of time. This test can cause some physical discomfort to the test subject as they must be tested inside a hood enclosure. If a test subject cannot taste the challenge agent (sweet or bitter solution) they cannot be tested using this method, nor can subjects who have adverse reactions to the solutions.
Quantitative Fit testing is suitable for testing disposable and reusable half masks and full-face masks, including PAPR respirators. This test is done by using a particle-counting instrument that will accurately measure the particle count inside the breathing zone of the tight fitting respirators and compare it to the particle count outside the respirators to give a numeric score. It can be used to test RPE to any required level of protection. It is completely objective, and there is no chance of test subject deception. The test itself can be conducted in under 10 minutes. The machine also provides a screening stage in order to avoid testing a poorly fitted respirator. It is considered to be the most reliable way to undertake a quantitative fit test.
